Dr. James Hockenberry

Superintendent of Schools

Dr. James Hockenberry brings 31 years of experience in public education and a proven record of transformational leadership. He was named Superintendent of Schools for Lufkin Independent School District in April 2024. Prior to this appointment, he served as Assistant Superintendent for District Services in Longview Independent School District and spent 14 years as superintendent of Center ISD and Chireno ISD. Earlier in his career, he served as a principal, assistant principal, and science teacher.

Dr. Hockenberry earned a Bachelor of Science (1991), Master of Education (1999), and Doctor of Education (2010) from Stephen F. Austin State University.

He is widely recognized for driving innovation through strategic planning, systems improvement, and a relentless focus on student outcomes. Dr. Hockenberry champions high expectations and equity for underrepresented students, leveraging collaboration, data-informed decision-making, and human capital development to transform organizations and build future-ready schools.
