    Advanced Academics

    Athletics

    Lufkin ISD is proud to offer a wide variety of athletic programs at both our middle school and high school campuses. From Football, Basketball, Baseball, Softball, Golf, and Tennis to our Sports Medicine program, students have many opportunities to get involved, build teamwork skills, and stay active. Our athletic programs focus on developing character, leadership, and sportsmanship—both on and off the field.     Career & Technical Education

    The Career and Technical Education Department serves hundreds of middle school & high school students, allowing them the opportunity to explore career pathways to earn certificates and licenses before they graduate from high school. Lufkin ISD partners with local colleges to offer students dual credit in order to get a jump start on their post-secondary plans. There is something for everyone in Career and Technical Education.     Dual Credit

    The Dual Credit program at Lufkin High School gives students the opportunity to earn both high school and college credit at the same time. Through partnerships with local colleges and universities, students can take real college-level courses while still in high school—saving time and money as they work toward their future goals. This program helps prepare students for life after graduation by building academic confidence, exposing them to higher-level coursework, and giving them a head start on their college journey.

    Dual Language

    Lufkin ISD is proud to serve the multilingual students and families in our community. Our Bilingual and ESL programs support more than 1,400 Emergent Bilingual students, along with others who benefit from language services. These programs help students develop language skills while growing as bilingual, biliterate, and culturally aware learners who enrich our classrooms with their diverse backgrounds and experiences.

    Early College High School

    Early College High Schools (ECHS) enable students to earn their high school diploma and up to 60 college credits hours simultaneously. A recent study by the American Institutes for Research (AIR) found that ECHS students were nearly three times as likely to earn an Associate’s degree or certificate, and significantly more likely to earn a Bachelor’s degree than, their non-ECHS peers. (AIR Press Release, September 2019)

    Fine Arts

    The Lufkin ISD Fine Arts Department offers a variety of programs at both our middle school and high school campuses. These programs include Dance/Drill, Band, Theatre, Art, and Choir, giving students many opportunities to explore their creativity and talents. Through participation in Fine Arts, students develop confidence, discipline, teamwork, and self-expression while showcasing their skills in performances, exhibitions, and competitions. Our Fine Arts programs play an important role in enriching the educational experience and celebrating the creativity of our students.

    Gifted & Talented

    The Gifted and Talented (G/T) program at Lufkin ISD serves students from primary through high school, providing challenging and enriching learning opportunities that go beyond the traditional classroom experience. Designed to foster creativity, critical thinking, and advanced problem-solving skills, the program encourages students to explore their passions and reach their highest potential. Through differentiated instruction, engaging projects, and opportunities for deeper inquiry, the Gifted and Talented program supports high-ability learners as they grow academically, socially, and emotionally throughout their educational journey.

    Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps

    Lufkin ISD is currently in the planning period for a Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) program. This program will be housed at the Lufkin High School. More information to come!

    STEM

    Offered at Lufkin Middle School & Lufkin High School. STEM at Lufkin ISD empowers students to explore science, technology, engineering, and math through hands-on, real-world learning. From problem-solving projects to innovative classroom experiences, students build critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration skills that prepare them for college, careers, and a rapidly changing world.

Dr. James Hockenberry

Superintendent of Schools

Dr. James Hockenberry brings 29 years of experience in public education. Since January 2020, he has served as Assistant Superintendent for District Services in Longview ISD and previously spent 14 years as superintendent in Center and Chireno ISDs. His background also includes roles as a principal, assistant principal, and science teacher.

A three-time graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University, Dr. Hockenberry holds a bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate in education. He is a respected mentor and presenter at the local, state, and national levels and is committed to high expectations, equity, and transformational leadership for all students.

Mr. Randy Burton brings over nine years of hands-on experience and leadership in school transportation. At Lufkin ISD, he leads with a strong focus on safety, efficiency, and service, ensuring that every student has access to dependable and secure transportation each day.
