Herty Primary hosts campus Special Olympics
Herty Primary hosted Special Olympics in the gym and outdoors at the Herty campus. The students were climbing through hula hoops, riding bikes, jumping through bubbles and having a wonderful time.

Ed Foundation board gets sneak peak at STREAM Lab at Slack Elementary
The May Education Foundation board meeting was held at the newly designed educational space called the “STREAM Lab” on the Slack Elementary campus. The room is filled with interactive computer tablets, state-of-the-art microscopes, models of earth, moon, planets and volcanoes, as well as art activities that relate to science and math.

SFA STEM Academy inducts 31 students
The Stephen F. Austin State University STEM Academy inducted 31 students at the Tom Jack Lucas Auditorium on Monday evening. These students will experience a rigorous curriculum with STEM activities and labs on the SFA campus.

This year’s new teachers enjoyed a reception hosted by the administration, as they wrap up their first year at Lufkin ISD.

LHS Band concert to feature music from the Band of Brothers
The Lufkin HS Band will be in concert at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15th at the Tom Jack Lucas Auditorium. The band is performing a special presentation of music from the Band of Brothers (the HBO World War II mini-series) sound track and will present a slide show of military pictures from the Lufkin Band family.

Lufkin students competed at the Angelina County Science & Tech Fair
Purple and gold was in the house at the Expo Center going head to head against area schools in competitions such as catapults, robotics, contraptions and life science projects at the Angelina County Science and Tech Fair.

Lufkin High School senior balances rodeo, cheerleading on her way to state
Lufkin High School senior Mackenzie Foley has been riding horses and doing flips for most of her life. In June, she’ll compete in the state rodeo in Abilene with hopes of qualifying for the national rodeo in Wyoming.

Why it’s important to vote
I’ll never forget the first time I voted. It was 1995, my senior year in high school. My government teacher, Mr. Cyr, instilled in me the importance of voting and being an educated voter.
