Lufkin High School partnered with Stephen F. Austin State University for the first LHS “signing” event that included almost 50 high school seniors. The event was the culmination of college week where a celebration of higher education was felt across the district. Even door decorating contests were held at the elementary and primary campuses.

“Stephen F. Austin is the best partner. I received all my degrees from SFA. We were recently named as a Distinguished High School and that opened up opportunities for our students,” said Lynn Torres, Superintendent of Schools.

Dr. Frye, SFASU Students Affairs Director, greeted the students as Lumberjacks. He told his story and compared himself to some students in the audience.

“Like some of you, I’m a first generation college student,” said Dr. Frye.

Then he offered tips for success including:

  1. Go to Class.
  2. Get to know your professor.
  3. Get engaged in positive student activities.
  4. Live the SFA Way (take care of each other)
  5. Take care of yourself.

He ended saying he would see the graduates at orientation and — “Axe ’em, Jacks!
