Lufkin High School accounting teacher Janice Holcomb, center right, poses with her 2018 state winning accounting team, from left, Reece Durbin, Josh Simmons and Kyle Wynne, in front of the flag recognizing their academic accomplishment. Not pictured from the team is Michael Calhoun who is currently attending Rice University.

Durbin is attending Stephen F. Austin State University majoring in accounting. Wynne is attending Texas A&M University pursuing a degree in physical therapy. Simmons is one of the two seniors who will represent this year’s team.

Wynne scored a perfect score at the state level, and the four students all had scores in the top ten in the state.

This is not the first time for coach Janice Holcomb to take a group of students to state. She has taken ten regional team championships to state winning a silver medal three times. She has taken individual winners to state over the past twelve years. She was even awarded the 2017 Sponsor Excellence Award by the University Interscholastic League for her outstanding representation in UIL accounting over the past 20 years.

The flag is now hanging among the other state recognition flags on the Main Street hallway at Lufkin High School. Currently, it is the only banner for academic accomplishment but hopefully not for long.
