NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

Congratulations to the students of Lufkin Middle School and other Angelina County schools who have just won the United States championship of the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Penn.

The Lufkin squad — nicknamed the “Thundering 13” — got huge home runs from Clayton Wigley and Mark Requena as it rallied from a 5-0 deficit to take a 6-5 win over the North Carolina squad in the U.S. title game at the Little League World Series. With the win, Lufkin advances to the international LLWS championship against Japan, which defeated Mexico earlier in the day. The game will be broadcast at 2 p.m. (Texas time) Sunday on ABC.

A large Lufkin contingent was at the nationally televised game to cheer for the team as it came back to win.

We’ll post many more photos from Williamsport in the next 24-48 hours, but here are some highlights from Saturday’s historic contest.
