The local media was recognized at the August board meeting for the 2016-17 TASB Media Honor Roll. Certificates were given to Station Manager Starla Bickerstaff from KTRE, Publisher Jenniffer Ricks from The Lufkin News (accepting on her behalf was Stephanie Stevens, Education Reporter), and not pictured were Roy and Ino Reyes from the La Lengua newspaper.

More than 420 representatives were added to the TASB Media Honor Roll across the state. The Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), sponsors the Media Honor Roll to recognize media outlets and reporters for fair, accurate, and balanced reporting of news about public schools. The criteria for the district selection includes the media representative’s efforts to get to know the superintendent, board president, and the district’s mission and goals; report school news in a fair, accurate, and balanced manner; give a high profile to positive news about schools; visit the schools; and maintain a policy of no surprises by sharing information with school officials according to the TASB website.
