Lufkin ISD Gifted & Talented Services
Lufkin ISD’s gifted services provides identified students with the necessary supports that not only challenge and engage them but also encourage them to reach their full potential.
In the state of Texas, a gifted and talented student is a child or youth who performs at or shows the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment and who exhibits high performance capability in an intellectual, creative, or artistic area; possesses an unusual capacity for leadership; or excels in a specific academic field. Lufkin ISD recognizes that gifted and talented students are found in all grade levels, all races, socioeconomic groups, geographic locales, and environments.
LISD gifted students from Kinder to 5th grade are grouped with other students who are identified as gifted at Dunbar Primary (K-2nd) and Brandon Elementary (3rd-5th). LISD teachers trained in gifted education provide appropriate instruction based on student strengths in the four core areas: math, science, English, social studies.
Identified gifted secondary students in grades 6-12 have their unique needs addressed in advanced, advanced placement (AP), and dual credit course in English language arts, science, math, and social studies. Although students take these courses with students not identified as gifted, teachers trained in gifted education differentiate instruction using techniques best suited to G/T learners. In addition, Lufkin Middle School has a G/T section for students gifted in language arts in which they learn with only other gifted students. Lufkin High School has a unique integrated studies program that combines language arts, World History, and Art History in 9th and 10th grades for students gifted in these areas.
The first step in determining if LISD’s gifted services will benefit your child is to have your child assessed. Please select the “Testing Information” link below for instructions on how to have your child tested.
Out-of-district students who qualify for Gifted & Talented services will be waived the out-of-district tuition fees.
