Bilingual/ESL Programs
Lufkin ISD offers a variety of Dual-Language and ESL Programs to effectively address the academic needs of our students. The programs include the following:
Two-Way Dual Language (grades K-12)
The Dual Language Program develops bilingualism by developing proficiency in both English and Spanish. The students will learn a second language and develop fluency in both communication and literacy. Students will develop a positive self-image by cultivating an understanding and appreciation of their own culture as well as other cultures. Each class includes native Spanish speakers and native English speakers.
The Dual-Language Two-Way program is implemented in grades PK3-12 and is located at the following campuses:

Dual Language Benefits
Research shows that dual language programs can:
- Leave students with more flexibility in thinking, greater sensitivity to language, and a better ear for listening.
- Give the child a head start in language requirements for college.
- Give a child the ability to communicate with people he would otherwise not have the chance to know.
- Increase job opportunities in careers where knowing another language is an asset.
- Improve a child’s understanding of his/her native language.
- Open the door to other cultures and helps the child to understand and appreciate people from other countries.
Bilingual students:
- Achieve as well or better in English language arts
- Achieve greater overall proficiency in pronunciation and language skills in the second language
- Generally achieve higher scores in reading
- Perform as well or better in other subjects
- Are shown to be more creative thinkers
- Have better developed verbal skills

One-Way Dual Language (grades PK3-5)
The one-way model serves only students of limited English proficiency and gradually transfers a student to English-only instruction. Majority of instruction is in their native language (Spanish) to develop foundation to assist with the transfer to English.

English as a Second Language Program
An English program that serves students of limited English proficiency. The English as a second language/pull-out model provides a part-time teacher to give instruction in English language arts only. A student in an ESL Pull-Out program remains in mainstream instructional arrangements for all other content areas. These students continue to develop English proficiency for reclassification and be successful in a regular classroom.

Transitional
The Transitional model serves students of limited English proficiency. All instruction is English with the support of bilingual teacher to assist with transfer of language.
