Emmaly Olivares, third grader at Brandon Elementary, was the first place winner of the MLK poster contest. The contest was coordinated by Councilman Robert Shankle and the Lufkin Daily News, and the winners were announced at Jones Park following the MLK march.

Emmaly drew her picture with a theme in mind.

“All people matter,” said Emmaly.

Her poster had designs in the background that she colored with crayons. She said these designs were the colors of all the people. She was very surprised when Councilman Shankle handed her an envelope with $50 cash inside.

“I’ve never had this much money!” she said.

When asked what she would like to buy with her winnings.

“Chips,” said Emmaly.

Second place poster winner is Janelle Musa from Brandon Elementary and third place poster winner is Sydney Cruz from Slack Elementary. Thanks to all students who participated this year.
