District of Innovation Plan
The Lufkin Independent School District Board of Trustees authorized the Superintendent of Schools to convene a committee to develop a District of Innovation (DOI) renewal plan during its regularly scheduled meeting on January 19, 2017.
Lufkin ISD’s original DOI plan was approved for implementation from 2017–2022 and later extended through 2027. Renewing this plan ensures continued flexibility to personalize instruction, support innovative learning models, and meet the unique needs of all Lufkin ISD students.
Established by the 84th Texas Legislature, the District of Innovation designation allows traditional independent school districts to access many of the same flexibilities provided to Texas open-enrollment charter schools—empowering local districts to make decisions that best serve their students and communities.
With the Board’s approval, a District of Innovation Committee—comprised of parents, teachers, campus and district administrators, community and business leaders, and Board representatives—collaborated to update Lufkin ISD’s Innovation Plan. The plan aligns with the district’s strategic priorities.
